Jonathan Quinn, Eagle Scout

Sunday, June 2, 1996, Corvallis Gazette-Times: Letters to the Editor

Impressive Credentials

In early June the Corvallis Gazette-Times will feature the many valedictorians and salutatorians of our local high schools. These young people are not the only outstanding citizens our community has produced. They may not even be our "brightest and best." Consider, briefly, the impressive credentials of Jonathan James Quinn.

Home schooled, Jonathan, 17, has already easily passed the GED and is now in his second term at LBCC earning college credits. Carrying 17 hours. More than a full academic load! Jonathan has already been accessed into the United States Navy under its highly coveted Delayed Entry Program. Jonathan will enter active duty in September and the Navy's very selective Submarine Service. During his four-year hitch he will serve his country well, "see the world," receive leadership training and an unequalled technical education and accrue $14,000 for college tuition under the "Montgomery G.I. Bill."

Did I mention Jonathan is an Eagle Scout? And unquestionably the finest worker ever sent to me - in three years - by, sadly, a now-defunct YES (Youth Employment Service). A responsible, tireless, conscientious self-starter, Jonathan saved all of his wages to outfit himself and pay for his trip last summer to Philmont, the national Scout ranch in northeastern New Mexico. He lives his Boy Scout Oath every day.

So when those pictures of valedictorians and salutatorians begin to appear in the G-T, I, myself, will see a uniformed Jonathan - BSA and USN - alongside them all. You should, too.

Ted Crocker planned, organized and supervised the construction of a play structure designed for children eighteen months to three years old in the play yard of Stronghold Cottage, a non-profit drug treatment program serving women from Linn, Benton and other nearby counties. Five women and their children live at Stronghold for several months while the mothers work on their recovery. Crocker received generous donations of materials from Burcham's Metals, Supply One, and Tum-a-Lum Lumber of Albany and Copland Lumber, and True Value Hardware of Corvallis. He organized volunteers to dig postholes, set the posts in concrete and build the structure; for many of the volunteers this was their first experience mixing concrete and using a square and level to keep things straight. The project was completed September 3, 1995.

A New Year's Eagle Scout
Decorated youth recites oath at late-night ceremony Saturday

By BENNETT HALL
Gazette-Times reporter

It will be weeks before we know for sure, but a Corvallis boy may well be the first Eagle Scout of 2000.

Just after midnight Saturday, Matthew Rosenberg held up three fingers of his right hand and recited the Scout Oath. Before the year was a minute old, the papers were signed and it was official.

Scouts become Eagles at the local level. After they pass their board of review, documents confirming their new rank are passed on to the national council. That takes awhile, so it's impossible to know right away whether a Scout in some earlier time zone passed his board and took his oath before Matthew did.

But Matthew's father, Ken Rosenberg, has checked with scouting's U.S. headquarters and made some inquiries through a friend in England. So far, he hasn't turned up any other Eagle candidates who planned to take their boards on New Year's Eve.

"I really doubt anybody (else) has had the foresight to plan their Eagle board to end at 12:01," said Michele Bojanowski, a Benton District Boy Scout commissioner who sat on Matthew's review board.

"My guess would be yes, he will be the first Eagle Scout in the United States." And perhaps the first in the world.

"We realized several months ago that he was getting close, and we thought, gee, what a nice thing to have him be the first Eagle Scout of the new millennium," said Matthew's mother, Lauren Rosenberg.

But as remarkable a distinction as that is, what's even more remarkable is how quickly Matthew has risen to scouting's highest rank. Matthew made Eagle just two years and nine months after becoming a Boy Scout - and he's still six months shy of his 14th birthday.

"I've been in scouting 18 years," Bojanowski said, "and I can only think of two people that I know who got their Eagle at age 14." Very few Scouts, she said, achieve the rank before age 16, and only a small percentage ever get that far at all.

"He's very focused on Boy Scouts," said his scoutmaster, Chip Cover of Corvallis Troop 2. "He works at it hard, and he works at it consistently."

Matthew Rosenberg has always been a quick study.

He strapped on his first pair of skis when he was just a toddler, and by the time he was 6 he was following his dad down the slopes at Whistler. He became a third-degree brown belt in tae kwon do this September, just three months after he turned 13. And almost from the moment he got into scouting, he knew he wanted to rise to the top rank.

"I'd been in some ceremonies, and I said that's what I wanted to be - an Eagle Scout," said Matthew.

But it hasn't always been easy.

"When he was a new Scout, just into it, he went on a campout and he loved it," his father recalled.

Unfortunately, the other members of the troop didn't take to camping as eagerly as Matthew did. So he made a tough decision. He left his friends behind and joined a patrol of older Scouts.

"He went on a hundred nights' worth of camping in about two years," Ken Rosenberg said. "He went on everything that they had."

When he wasn't out hiking and camping with his new Scout troop and sometimes even when he was, Matthew was earning merit badges. Today he has 26 - five more than the requirement for Eagle rank.

"The ones I learned the most on were the citizenship merit badges," Matthew said. For his community citizenship badge, he researched and wrote a report on the history of Corvallis, interviewed Mayor Helen Berg and attended a City Council meeting.

"That was really interesting, to see how the riverfront project was handled," he said.

Matthew said he wholeheartedly recommends scouting to his friends. "I think it's a great program."

Still, there's one thing about the organization he'd change if he could - its policy of refusing membership to anyone who is gay or doesn't believe in God. Matthew said he thinks everyone should have the same opportunity to learn from scouting that he's had. "I don't like to exclude anybody," he said.

Matthew said he's not sure yet what he wants to do with his life - after all, he's still only 13 - but he knows he wants to stay active in the Boy Scouts.

"I've learned a lot from scouting," he said. "I want to give back what they gave to me."
